Summer hasn’t got it all

Most of the San Juan Mountains are almost snow-free, but on a June 16 glider flight, a reasonable amount of snow was still present in the northern areas. Most high-country lakes have thawed, but Columbine Lake, which sits at 12,685 feet just north of Ophir Pass, was still about 90 percent ice-covered, and the hiking trails to it were snow-packed. The glider from which this view was captured was flying at about 17,000 feet.
