Authorities have identified a 62-year-old Durango man who was found dead inside his car Monday at the Trimble Crossing shopping center in the Animas Valley.
Gary Mangold died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Dan Bender, spokesman with the La Plata County Sheriffs Office.
Mangold lived in La Plata County for about seven years. His last known address was on Jenkins Ranch Road in the SkyRidge subdivision. He was about to be evicted and was unable to find work, Bender said.
Before moving to Durango, he worked for 28 years as a geophysicist in Australia.
Mangold was found about 4:15 p.m. in a large parking lot that services a grocery store and a hardware store in the Animas Valley. His body had been there for at least several days.
