Pitching conditions always a concern
The grounds crew works the mound after the Tigers-Indians game in Detroit earlier this month. While there are rules governing how mounds are set up, there is plenty of variance from park to park.
Jeff Klesc and Jason McDonald of the Blue Jays’ grounds crew prepare the mound at Roger Centre in Toronto one night before a scheduled game. “Mounds do vary from park to park,” Baltimore reliever Kevin Gregg said.
The pitching mound in Oakland, Calif., is the site of a conference for Texas starter Yu Darvish, pitching coach Mike Maddux and catcher Mike Napoli. According to baseball historian John Thorn, the first mention of the pitching mound in the rules appeared in 1903, when the height was capped at 15 inches. It was reduced to 10 inches after the 1968 season.
Mariners pitcher Blake Beavan seeks consolation on the mound after giving up a home run to Mark Trumbo of the Angels in a game at Anaheim, Calif. Guidelines for the mound indicate that starting 6 inches in front of the rubber, the mound is supposed to descend an inch for every foot toward the plate.
Barry Zito of the Giants is a veteran who has pitched from most current major league mounds. The shape of the mound can affect fielding, pitchers said.
