With primary ballots in and signs going up in the county, the county commissioner campaigns for the November election have begun. I am Julie Holligan Westendorff, and I am running in District 3. Although each candidate must live in the district where they are running, all voters get to vote for two candidates.
Since I came to La Plata County 17 years ago, I have worked as the Southern Ute Tribal prosecutor, Bayfield town judge and as a private-practice attorney. Currently, I am a real estate broker at Coldwell Banker. I have served our community in many volunteer capacities from Community Corrections and the La Plata County Humane Society to youth baseball. I am also an active Rotarian.
For the last 12 months, I have regularly attended commissioners meetings, including their meetings with Bayfield and Durango officials. Ive met with local town managers to get their perspectives on the futures of their communities and their expectations of county government. And I have met with county directors and employees to better understand how the county operates. I am ready for this job.
Meeting and talking with people in the community has helped me learn what county residents value and look for in their county commissioners.
As county commissioner, I pledge to make balanced, sensible decisions. I want to help move La Plata County forward with improved economic vitality, responsible management of county funds and safe and responsible energy development. Effective county government requires nonpartisan leadership, making good decisions for the whole county.
I look forward to meeting county residents in the months ahead. If you see me on the street or walking in your neighborhood, please stop me and introduce yourself. I want to hear what you have to say.
