Like most people who drive or cycle Rim Drive frequently, I was delighted to hear that the section near the golf course was going to be repaved because of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Repaving was long overdue, with the old road base hopelessly broken down and full of potholes. However, Im guessing that the race organizers are appalled that the city of Durango chose to chip-seal rather than repave with asphalt.
I cant imagine amateur cyclists, much less world-class road racers, are going to want to ride the chip-sealed road. The surface is full of loose gravel, and washboards have already formed all over the road. The road is far more dangerous now for cyclists than it was previously. What were you thinking, city of Durango?
