I am writing in response to the article, Students parents call foul on coach, (Herald, June 6). I first was a pupil of Robin Oliger at Needham Elementary School when she was my P.E. teacher, and I attended her volleyball camps where I learned to love the sport of volleyball. I also was an honorary team mascot and ball-shagger during the years my older sister played for Oliger at Durango High School. Eventually, I was able, through hard work and ability, to compete for the DHS varsity volleyball team and play for her.
Through my experience with Oliger, I have admired her passion for bringing her love of volleyball to all ages and ability levels of Durango kids. I am also extremely proud to be a part of the legacy that is DHS volleyball, because in great part to her efforts.
I have been saddened to read and hear of the allegations raised against her and although I cant speak directly to those claims, I can personally attest that she was an encouraging and positive figure in my youth, and I hope she is allowed to continue to coach DHS volleyball in the future. Durango is lucky to have an educator and coach such as Robin Oliger. I am among hundreds who are better for having played for her.
