Mud adventure races slated Aug. 11 at DMR
Durango Mountain Resort will host Muck and Mire on the Mountain on Aug. 11.
The races will include the 5K Muck & Mire event geared toward families and recreational contenders. During this event, participants will traverse logjams, scale rock gardens, negotiate a mud pit, pond skim and more.
The 10K competitive race is designed for serious racers and will include slack lines, slip-and-slide, pond swim, culvert crawl, scale cargo nets and climb walls.
The Mini Muck and Mire Mile Race for children will be held after completion of the 5K and 10K events and will include the mud pit and slip-and-slide.
A post-event celebration with a beer garden and soda party will feature awards and prizes.
Participants can register at www.prerace.com/races/event/41016/M3. Early registration fees are $35 for adults (13 and older); $15 for kids (12 and younger); and $90 for a family of up to four. Early registration ends at 10 p.m. Aug. 3.
Registrants should bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Manna Soup Kitchen, which also will receive a portion of event proceeds.

Free backpacking trip to be offered
The San Juan Mountains Association is offering a free backpacking trip Aug. 11 and 12 led by certified interpretive guide MK Thompson.
The trip will travel around the Four Mile Lake loop, a 12.4-mile loop in the San Juan National Forest. Optional side trips will explore peaks and other lakes. An optional informational meeting will precede the trip.

The Wednesday Wanderers will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for a moderate hike to Engineer Mountain from Coal Bank Pass. Nonmembers should RSVP to Pat Dworkin at 259-9434.
A challenging high-altitude 12-mile hike on the Rhoda-Verde Loop will meet at 7 a.m. Thursday. Most of the route is rolling tundra with possible loose rock to the summit. The hike is limited to 12. To RSVP, call Charlie Berglund at 247-9747 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
