A trio of Durango teenagers have been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Rising high school seniors Luke Sutherlin, Samantha Jones and Sage Potter will travel to London on Friday, free of charge, to absorb the action and drama of the Olympic Games.
All three are members of SOS Outreach, a Vail Valley-based nonprofit that mentors underserved youths and encourages community involvement through leadership and outdoor recreation. Seventeen other Coloradans ages 13 to 17 are taking part as well.
We chose kids who had been in the program the longest and who embraced our five core values: compassion, wisdom, dignity, discipline and courage, said Audra Snow, Durango program manager for SOS.
As preparation for the trip, the teenagers have been reading up on fair play, gender equality, respect for coaches and drug-free competition.
Security permitting, they hope to meet several Olympic athletes in London.
Theyre excited to meet new people. Theyre excited to see Big Ben, Snow said.
