I have taken a passing interest in the happenings in and around Durango lately, mainly because some good friends of mine have moved into the area to take up residence. I couldnt help but notice the similarities between the state of New South Wales, Australia, and Colorado in respect of fire management/policies as Sen. Ellen Roberts writes about.
We, too, experience major bush fires, as we call them, in a cycles of 10 to 15 years, which at the time they occur create as much havoc and loss of life and property as you have experienced recently.
My point is, no matter where you are, the same shock and reaction to the devastation of bush fires is universal. Human nature, being what it is, has a short memory of these things, and if the period between fires is long enough, most good intentions about making sure it doesnt happen again are soon forgotten or not acted upon.
