Tiger falters; McIlroy, Singh lead the rain-soaked PGA Championship
Vijay Singh hasn’t been in contention for a major in six years, but when play was suspended Saturday, he found himself tied for the lead at 6 under at the PGA Championship in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Rory McIlroy opened with three birdies and two par saves to take a share of the PGA Championship lead at 6 under, none bigger than on the third hole when his tee shot lodged in a tree limb about 7 feet off the ground. He reached up to remove the ball, took a penalty drop and made a 6-foot par putt to continue on his way.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – A brief look at the suspended third round of the 94th PGA Championship on Saturday on The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island:
LEADING: Rory McIlroy and Vijay Singh at 6 under. McIlroy completed nine holes, and Singh finished seven.
TRAILING: Adam Scott at 5 under through nine holes.
TIGER TALES: Woods failed to birdie the par-5 second, then missed a 4-foot birdie putt that unnerved him. Woods made bogeys on three of his next four holes and faced an 8-foot par putt on No. 8 when play resumes this morning.
ON THE REBOUND: Scott shot a 75 in windy conditions Friday, then birdied four of the last five holes he played Saturday before the round was suspended.
MAJOR REPORT: Masters champion Bubba Watson had his lowest round of the week with a 70. British Open winner Ernie Els shot 73. Watson was eight shots back. Els was 10 shots behind.
SHOT OF THE DAY: Rory McIlroy finding his ball in a rotted-out tree. He took an unplayable lie yet made par.
RYDER CUP: Don’t count Padraig Harrington out of the Ryder Cup yet. The Irishman shot a 69 to move five strokes off the lead. European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said Harrington would have to do something special to warrant a selection.
KEY STATISTIC: Twenty-six players will return at 5:45 a.m. today to finish the third round. Players will be grouped in threes and go off both the first and 10th tees in the fourth round.
NOTEWORTHY: Vijay Singh shot the only round in the 60s in Friday’s second round. There already have been seven sub-70 rounds in the suspended third round.
QUOTEWORTHY: “I did what I could do, and I’m sure before I go to bed (Saturday) I’ll know kind of where I stand going into (today) and see what happens,” Bo Van Pelt said before third-round play was suspended.
TV: 6 a.m.-noon today on TNT; noon-5 p.m. today on CBS.
