I attended Studio &s annual group show recently, and it was delightful. Ive followed John Grones work since he moved to Durango as a young man.
I believe the most wonderful painting he has ever done was a very large picture, perhaps 6-feet square, of a group of people at the Strater intersection, which residents of Durango can easily recognize. It had such detail that it was difficult to quickly look at it.
It hung for years in the emergency section of the former Mercy Hospital until the hospital was demolished. It was such a pleasure for patients and their families to contemplate during the stressful times they were experiencing there.
I accompanied my husband to the facility several times and spent much time in front of it. Several people have mentioned what a comfort it had been for them.
Its a real loss to our community that it is no longer accessible. Where is it now? Could the Herald sleuths find out and perhaps be instrumental in the public being able to enjoy it again?
