Montezuma-Cortez took advantage of its home-field advantage Wednesday at Conquistador Golf Course.
The Panthers topped the Durango High School boys golfers and everyone else, shooting a team 221 led by co-medalist Jakob Rudosky, who shot a 72 along with Jesse Beetham of Aspen and Robbie Bowles of Vail Christian.
Rudoskys dad, Micah Rudosky, is the Panthers head coach and the club pro at Conquistador.
Behind Cortez, Aspen was second with a 228, and Steamboat Springs was third at 230.
The Demons 234 was good enough for a sixth-place tie with Grand Junction out of a larger-than-normal 12-team field in Cortez, which will host the regional tournament this year.
Eric Walker led Durango with a 77.
Thats the first time this year hes shot in the 70s, so thats a good sign, DHS golf coach Kirk Rawles said. That puts four guys in three events weve had in the 70s. Thats a good starting point.
Cory Gillespie shot a 78 on Wednesday, Trevor Bogus shot 79, Bo Ward an 82, and freshman Cameron Barhardt shot an 85 in his first varsity round.
Rawles said he was pleased with the teams early season performance to date.
Im really optimistic, especially having Eric break that 80 number, he said after the Demons third tournament this season. Theyre learning more and more every time we go out on how to maybe capture a couple strokes here or there.
If all of them can pick up two strokes on each nine I think thats very achievable; I think they have the confidence that they can do that. I definitely like where were at this early in the season.
Rawles also got a good showing from his junior varsity crew, which was led by Liam Millars 81.
Also for the JV:
Garrett Mulkey, 85.
Daniel McElwain, 90.
Cy Spicer, 92.
Sage Meyers, 93.
Kevin Cornett, 93.
Mulkey has shot three rounds in the mid 80s, so hes really looking solid, Rawles said.
The meet also was Millars first competition this year, and Rawles said hell probably have him play in the varsity lineup today at Pagosa Springs as he rotates golfers in and out of the top lineup to give different kids a varsity look.
