The Durango High School football team had a rough go in its season opener Friday, falling 48-9 against Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs.
Durango, which was without starting quarterback Jeremy Szura, had a tough time moving the ball against a stout Indians defense. DHS got a 28-yard field goal from Blake Dunlap to cut the lead to 22-3 in the second quarter, and a late touchdown pass from Alex Lavenue to Garrett Marcum with 3:47 to go provided the final 48-9 margin.
Now we have a measuring stick, DHS head coach Greg Wyatt told KPTE 99.7 FM in his postgame interview with the new local voice of Demons football. We believe in what were doing offensively and defensively. We need to correct some techniques.
An experienced group of offensive skill players for Cheyenne Mountain (1-0) was able to exploit a young DHS defense. Quarterback Alex Snyder had two touchdown passes to Sharell Bell, one to Ryan McMahon and one to James Sullivan, who also ran for a 52-yard touchdown.
McMahon was the main driving force for Cheyenne Mountain, however. Aside from his touchdown catch, the senior had a 72-yard punt return for a score and a 4-yard touchdown run to help pace the Indians.
Wyatt said he was impressed with the Indians complement of offensive skill players.
Theyve probably got four kids out there that are potential (Division I players), he said. No excuses, but thats a good football team.
The fourth-year head coach added that at this point, hes not as concerned with Fridays result as he is with how his team responds before next weeks home opener against Kirtland Central.
What I told the kids is Im less concerned about the result as I am the reaction. How are they going to react to this? ... We need to execute on the defensive side (on) tackling. That was a huge problem. And offensively, we had way too much pressure (from) the front four, Wyatt said.
DHS lost quarterback Hayden Sill to an undisclosed injury in the second half. He was held out by the trainer as a precaution and will be evaluated further once the team returns to Durango.
Szura has a chance to return for next weeks home opener at DHS Stadium.
