Spain’s David Ferrer celebrated a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in 4 hours, 31 minutes over Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic in the quarterfinals Thursday of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Ferrer is the only man left in the draw who never has reached a Grand Slam final.

Novak Djokovic jumped into the U.S. Open semifinals with a straight-sets victory over Martin del Potro. He’ll play David Ferrer for a spot in Sunday’s final and a chance to repeat as major champion.

Men’s Results, Quarterfinals: No. 4 David Ferrer beat No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic in five sets and No. 2 Novak Djokovic beat No. 7 Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets.

Mixed Doubles Results: Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares each won their first Grand Slam title, defeating Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski in a third-set tiebreaker.

Stat of the Day: 5. The number of doubles finals the Bryan brothers (Bob and Mike) have reached at the U.S. Open. With a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer, the three-time champions matched the Open Era record of five appearances in the finals. Bob Lutz and Stan Smith reached the final in 1968, 1974, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Quote of the Day: “Maybe I can compare it with Davis Cup. I enjoyed a lot playing this match with Janko, of course, because I won. But it was a very emotional match, one of the best emotional matches of my career,” said David Ferrer, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals for the second time in his career.
