The Bayfield High School football team came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat a stubborn Dolores Bears squad 22-7 on Friday night.
Trailing 7-6 after three quarters, the Class 2A Wolverines took the lead for good on a 73-yard pass-and-run from sophomore quarterback Matt Knickerbocker to sophomore running back Anthony Chamblee with 10:56 to play in the game.
Knickerbocker passed to Colter McMenimen for a two-point conversion and a 14-7 lead over the Class 1A Bears.
The Wolverines Aubry Brown recovered a Dolores fumble on the next possession with BHS taking over at the Bears 27-yard line.
Joe Zinks 26-yard run set up Knickerbocker for a 1-yard quarterback sneak for Bayfields final touchdown. Zinks two-point conversion run gave Bayfield its final 22-7 advantage with 7:46 to play.
BHS scored first in the nonconference game on a 26-yard keeper by Knickerbocker midway through the second quarter.
Bayfield had forced Dolores to punt out of its end zone. Chamblee returned the kick to the Dolores 26.
Knickerbocker took over from there, racing across the goal line to give Bayfield a 6-0 lead.
But Dolores answered with a 73-yard shovel pass from Colton Schall to Michael Ford with 3:03 to play in the second quarter.
Mulkey Youngquist of the Bears kicked the extra point to stake Dolores to a 7-6 lead a lead the Bears would hold until the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines drove from their own 21 to the Dolores 25 before fumbling on a fourth-down play right before halftime.
Bayfield recovered two fumbles in the first half but couldnt convert them into points.
TJ Taylor recovered a Dolores fumble with 9:07 to play in the second quarter. Sophomore Zane Westbrook recovered a Dolores fumble on the opening drive of the game.
The Wolverines played Friday night without veterans TJ Pazell, Trey Lange and Kody Hageman, who were suspended for violating team rules, according to BHS officials.
The Wolverines also were without Allec Rodriguez, who is recovering from a knee injury.
Bayfield (2-0), ranked fifth in Class 2A by coloradopreps.com, will open Western League play next Friday in Basalt.
Dolores moved to 1-1 after opening with a 61-0 victory over the Montezuma-Cortez junior varsity team.
