Friday, my parents experienced the caring concern that makes living in La Plata County a special experience. As they drove home from Bayfield on Florida Road (County Road 240), they watched a cottonwood fall across the road, blocking their way. Other people stopped, and young people quickly became involved gathering saws to clear the road.
When a second cottonwood unexpectedly came down, my dad was caught off guard and had to throw himself into the ditch at the side of the road to avoid being crushed. Immediately, everyone responded to this crisis, making sure both Mom and Dad were taken care of.
The road was quickly cleared enough for Mom to drive through, getting Dad to the emergency room. They would like all the people there that day to know that while he has a broken nose, 10 stitches and some bumps and bruises, Dad is fine.
Mom and Dad (and their whole extended family) are grateful for the respectful concern each person there showed these elderly folks. There is no doubt that La Plata County neighbors are good people.
