Piedra Vista grabbed hold of the game in the second quarter, and the Durango High School football team just couldnt quite wrestle it back before the Panthers ran away with victory.
Piedra Vista scored 43 points before halftime, 36 in the second quarter, then used the running clock after the break to secure a 43-6 victory over the Demons on Friday in Farmington.
Junior quarterback Isaiah Valdez was the main catalyst for the Panthers. The signal caller threw four touchdown passes, including two in the final three minutes of the half, to help boost the Panthers to 3-0 before giving way to his understudy after intermission.
Kolt Munoz returned an interception 17 yards for a score to open the second-quarter barrage, and Valdez hit Beau Clifton a couple of minutes later to lift the Piedra Vista lead to 22-0.
Valdez found Bryson Martinez for a 76-yard score, then Clifton again from 63 yards to boost the lead to 36-0.
After a DHS fumble, Valdez again hit Martinez from 16 yards out to cap the Piedra Vista scoring.
DHS got on the board in the fourth quarter when Jeremy Szura, getting his first start at quarterback after battling an injury the first two weeks, ran in for a score from 11 yards out to deny Piedra Vista the shutout.
Durango (1-2) will host Farmington at 7 p.m. Friday at DHS Stadium.
