“For 6 miles a gallon, I take my bed, my house, my wife, my dog and my car,” said Mel Hartz, of California, while sitting inside his motorhome with his wife, Sondra, and dog, Mollie, at the Alpen Rose RV Park. The couple have been camping for more than 40 years. They started out in an army tent and now live six months of the year in a 2012 42-foot Winnebago that has a full wall slide-out and two more slide-outs. “We want to be comfortable,” he said.

Bill and Barbara McGraw made a stop in Durango while pulling their homemade camper with a 1930 Plymouth street rod. The couple, from Warfordsburg, Pa., were on a five-week trip traveling the country sleeping in the camper. “You might notice that the camper has no kitchen. That’s because I’m on vacation, too, so he has to take me out to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.” Barbara McGraw said.
