PURGATORY - Summer at Durango Mountain Resort is more than going downhill fast, although there is plenty of that at Purgatory.
In addition to the alpine slide, scenic chairlift rides are available as part of the summer operations (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), weather permitting. Mountain bike uploads also are available with a network of singletrack and doubletrack mountain biking trails accessible on the upper and lower portions of the mountain. Digglers (mountain-style scooters) also are available.
Hiking trails course around the mountain, leaving from the base area or the upper chairlift station at Lift 4. Detailed maps are located at the ticket office. Miniature golf is available on a course around the base of Lift 4.
Disc golf holes (baskets) are scattered about the lower reaches of Purgatory and available for play.
Other activities in the plaza at DMR include the rock-climbing wall, a bungee-trampoline setup and a new mechanical bull (with a big air-inflated landing pad).
Youngsters also can pan for precious metals in the plaza's "mining stream."
Numerous summer food-service options are offered in the base area. Group activities, especially organized activities for children, also are available. Various pricing alternatives exist for all of the summer activities. For more information and pricing details, visit the Web site durangomountainresort.com.
