Here are some findings from the Chidren’s Campaign county-by-county look at the state of children in Colorado for 2012. La Plata County statistics are given first with state averages in parenthesis:



Children make up 20 percent of county residents (24 percent).

29 percent of births were to single women (24 percent).

Teen birth rate, per 1,000, was 23.5 (33).

14 percent of children were living under the Federal Poverty Level (17 percent).

11.6 cases of child abuse and neglect, per 1,000 (8.8).

16.5 percent of children lacked health insurance (10.3 percent).

100 percent of public school kindergartners were enrolled in full-day programs (67 percent).

28 percent were not proficient at reading in fourth grade, the age students “stop learning to read and start reading to learn” (35 percent).
