Gary Masners letter to the editor (Herald, Sept. 21) prompted me to add my thoughts. I believe there is a partial explanation for the lower-than-predicted number of tourists/spectators for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge weekend. On the weekdays, Wednesday through Friday, many of the New Mexico schools were already in session so neither parents nor students could come. Also, as far as housing goes, did businesses take into account that the vast majority of cyclists and their crews were housed (and fed?) at Fort Lewis College?
I agree with Masner that the event was well worth the publicity to the world about Durango.
