Republican women to meet Oct. 16
The Southwest Republican Women will meet at noon Oct. 16 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
The program will address the state and local November general election ballot issues including Amendment S, Amendments 64 and 65, and the judicial recommendations on the retention of judges. Local issues also will be discussed.

Fire-management plan available for review
The National Parks Service will prepare a new fire-management plan and environmental assessment for Mesa Verde National Park and Yucca House National Monument.
The proposed plan is intended to be both strategic and operational, guiding the full range of wildland fire program activities that support land and resource management objectives. The purpose is to comply with new national park service policies and to incorporated new scientific information into fire-management planning within parks.
There will be an opportunity to comment formally during the initial project scoping and after the release of the assessment. The scoping phase is taking place, and the public is invited to submit written suggestions, comments, and concerns at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/meve. October is Residents Rights Month
October is Residents Rights Month, which is an annual event held by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care to celebrate and focus on awareness of dignity, respect and the value of long-term care residents.
The theme is My Voice, My Vote, My Right with the goals of educating the community about residents rights to vote and participate in the political process. Long-term care facilities available in Archuleta and La Plata counties are: Pine Ridge Extended Care Center in Pagosa Springs; Four Corners Health Care Nursing Home in Durango; Sunshine Gardens West in Durango; and Sunshine Garden Country Home located on Colorado Highway 172.

Volunteers needed to help with marathon
Volunteers are needed to help at the Durango Double Marathon today at these times:
7:45-8:30 a.m. volunteers are needed at the entrance to Parking Lot D north of the stadium on the Fort Lewis College campus. Volunteers will direct runners to stay on Rim Road.
9 a.m.-3:55 p.m. volunteers are needed at the intersection of East Second Avenue and 14th Street. Volunteers will direct runners to turn left from Second Avenue onto 14th Street.
1-3:55 p.m. volunteers are needed at the intersection of East Third Avenue and 14th Street. Volunteers will direct runners to turn right from 14th Street onto Third Avenue.
Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, a goodie bag and tickets to the after-party.

Tree of Ideas to visit Sunshine Gardens
The Tree of Ideas will visit Sunshine Gardens West on Friday .
This is an interactive art project, created by local graduate student MLissa Roulson, and is used as a vehicle to allow people to share ideas.
Sunshine Gardens will use it to allow residents, staff members and friends/family of Sunshine Gardens to share ideas about Sunshine Gardens.
The event will start with a Planting Party where the tree will be brought to the facility and the concept behind how it works will be presented by Roulson.
At the end of the trees time at Sunshine Gardens, people will have a Harvest Party and share the results of the project.
