DHS volleyball makes rival Cortez its next SWL victim

McKenna Franzen and the Durango Demons continued their reign of terror over the Southwestern League on Tuesday night, crushing Montezuma-Cortez’s hopes of insurrection 3-0 on Pink Digs for the Cure night at Durango High School. The Demons have won 18 consecutive SWL matches.

After a five-set win in Cortez two weeks ago, Gaby Razma and the Durango defense altered their strategy to account for the Montezuma-Cortez attack to the corners and slow sets. The Demons, behind strong service from Natalie Bulen and the rest of the team, won 25-19, 25-15, 25-19.

Kennedy Clark had 15 digs to lead the Demons on Tuesday night against Montezuma-Cortez. “I think it sends a positive statement,” Mikayla Montoya said of their rivalry win. “I’m prepared for the next chapter in our season. I think we’re all prepared.”

Zoe Cutler and Bella Bernazzani picked up plenty of key blocks Tuesday night. Cutler, a senior, stepped up from junior varsity to fill in for an injured Hannah Quick, and Cutler’s confident play added another weapon to the Durango arsenal in a straight-sets win.
