Meningitis victims face long, uncertain recovery

Samples of the injectable steroid that has sickened 284 people across the U.S. were shipped from Minnesota, one of the 16 states in which people who have injected the drug have contracted fungal meningitis, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the fungus was in one lot of vials made in August by the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass.
Meningitis toll

An outbreak of fungal meningitis has been linked to steroid shots for back pain. The medication, made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts, has been recalled.

Latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Illnesses: 284, including three joint infections.

Deaths: 23

States: 16 – Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
