Hungarian winemaker sets his own high standards

Szepsy István, who has lived through good times and bad at his family winery in Mád, Hungary, examines boxes of Furmint grapes that just arrived from the vineyard. The Furmint is the dominant variety. Szepsy had just taken over the family operation when the Soviet Union’s domination of the country cast a pall over winemaking. He persevered and bought land to plant.

Szepsy István, who demands quality, produces relatively few bottles of wine, but the products of his harvests are spoken for annually by loyal customers.

Szepsy István and his son, also István, inspect Furmint grapes just arrived from the vineyard. The younger Szepsy works at a nearby winery as well as the family operation. The Szepsy vineyards are in the famed Tokaj region of northeast Hungary.
