Animas High School to host activities
Animas High School will host these activities:
The ninth-grade physics students will hold a rocket launch exhibition from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the La Plata Fairgrounds north field, 2500 Main Ave.
An 11th-grade humanities exhibition will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Durango Joes on College Drive, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the location on Camino del Rio. Participants will discuss students proposals on how the government should resolve various political issues, not based on what Democrats or Republicans espouse, but based on what is morally and politically just.
Semester one student-led conferences will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the school.
The 10th-grade humanities exhibition will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Introduction to Japanese offered
The Durango Adult Education Center will offer an Introduction to Japanese class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesday from Nov. 5 to Dec. 19 at 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301.
The class will be taught by a native speaker and will cover the basics of speaking, writing and reading in Japanese. The class will cover Hiragana and Roman letters. Class participants will be required to purchase the textbook Japanese from Zero 1. No previous language experience is necessary.
The cost is $135 and preregistration is required.

Computer classes to be offered
The Durango Adult Education Center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301, will offer these computer classes beginning Nov. 5:
Computing Fundamentals will cover knowledge and use of computer hardware, software and operating system. The class will include an introduction to the Windows platform.
Word I will cover how to create documents, manipulate, edit and format text and print files.
Office 2007 will briefly cover MS Access, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint and Web Page Design programs.
Excel I will cover how to create worksheets, simple formulas, copy and move data and manipulate columns and rows.
Excel II will cover how to use columns, styles and templates, mail merge, manage files, create forms, and how to insert picture, shapes and tables.
Adobe Photoshop will cover how to create, edit and adjust digital images, and prepare them for print and website use.
Class times and cost will vary. Preregistration and prepayment are required.

FLC to offer continuing education classes
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
Dare to Prepare 101 will take place Wednesday evenings from Nov. 7 to Dec. 19. Former USAF Intelligence Officer Chuck Helvoigt will present steps for citizens to be physically and psychologically prepared for a local emergency as well as a large-scale disaster. The cost is $129 for six classes and includes CDs and handouts.
Beginning Italian will be taught by Paul Boyer on Monday and Wednesday evenings from Oct. 29 to Dec. 12. The cost is $199 for 12 classes.

Liberty School students to visit Mesa Verde
The youngest Liberty School students will visit Mesa Verde on Friday.
The kids will be integrating their science and social studies classes to increase their knowledge of geology through hands-on activities.
The school is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) children. Their specialized curriculum gives one-on-one Orton-Gillingham tutoring where the most help is needed.

Big Picture to host haunted house
Big Pictures Haunted High School and Chili Dinner will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
Proceeds will benefit Service Learning Projects. The event is open to children 9 years and older. The chili will be $3 per bowl. Entry will be $3 for students with an ID, $5 for tickets purchased in advance and $6 at the door.

Durango school forum to take place Tuesday
A Durango School District 9-R community forum will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane.
People are invited to discuss with Superintendent Dan Snowberger what a 21st Century Classroom is. People will learn about how todays classroom have changed and what the district is doing to prepare students for tomorrows jobs, including instilling creativity, innovation, critical thinking, collaboration and technology proficiency.
Sunnyside to host Halloween Carnival
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its Halloween Carnival from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 75 County Road 218.
Activities will include dinner, bingo, glow golf, dark dance, bounce house, haunted house and a silent auction. Tickets for games start at 25 cents. Participants are invited to wear their costumes. All proceeds will benefit the Parent-Teacher Association.
