Durango fishing guide Brian Capsay placed second overall, winning the silver medal, at the 2012 National Fly Fishing Championships last month in Bend, Ore.
With his silver medal finish and a gold-medal performance earlier this year at a regional tournament in Dulce, N.M., Capsay earned a spot on the U.S. Fly Fishing Team and was asked to compete in the 2013 World Fly Fishing Championship in Norway.
Im excited to have another chance to represent my country in the World Fly Fishing Championships, said Capsay, who competed in the World Championships in Finland in 2007.
Capsay, the head guide at The San Juan Angler in Durango, was among more than 40 anglers from around the country who competed in Bend. Held during three days, 3,532 fish were caught on five different venues in 15 hours of fishing.
It was a challenging competition, but I went into it with a just-have-fun attitude and it worked out, Capsay said.
Capsay is proud of his hometown rivers.
Durango is a year-round fly-fishing destination with both the Animas and San Juan rivers offering world-class winter angling, he said.
