Brown-McLachlan gap narrows

President Barack Obama’s re-election and Mike McLachlan’s apparent defeat of GOP incumbent state Rep. J. Paul Brown had volunteers in a celebratory mood.
Lachelt-Hotter race too close to call

The outcome of the District 2 county commissioner race remains up in the air after Tuesday’s election.

Democrat Gwen Lachelt leads Republican incumbent Kellie Hotter by 78 votes, but about 1,000 provisional ballots have yet to be counted.

La Plata County Clerk Tiffany Lee Parker said she expects to have those votes counted by early next week. She will release updated results as soon as they are tallied.

Fewer than 60 additional ballots had signature discrepancies, identification issues or are military ballots that have yet to arrive. Those ballots will be tallied after an eight-day verification period, Parker said.

A recount will happen only if the difference between the number of votes cast for the two candidates is equal to or less than half a percent of the votes cast for leading candidate.

As the numbers currently stand, the difference between votes in the District 2 commissioner race would need to be less than 70 to trigger a recount.

District 3 commissioner candidate Julie Westendorff had a healthier lead over Republican Harry Baxstrom at the end of Tuesday night. Westendorff appeared to have narrowly won the commissioner seat, receiving 244 more votes than Baxstrom. But a recall of that race could be triggered if the difference in votes between the two candidates narrows to less than 69.
