Rafea is a 30-year old Bedouin woman living in Jordan with four children and a husband who is eager to take a third wife. She and others from Kenya, Burkina Faso, Columbia and Guatemala are the subjects of “Solar Mamas,” which will be Wednesday’s free Independent Lens/Durango Community Cinema feature at the Durango Discovery Museum. With encouragement from the country’s Ministry of Environment, Rafea and other women leave their villages to go to the Barefoot College in India to train to become solar-energy engineers. But her personal journey is more complicated because of her husband’s resistance.

Doors for the screening will open at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments and the film begins at 6 p.m. Following the film at 7 p.m., a forum on alternative energy and global women’s issues will be held with representatives from the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center.
