The Ignacio High School girls basketball team defeated Farmington 40-28 on Saturday afternoon to take third place in the annual Shiprock Tournament in New Mexico.
We had some good pressure defense right from the start, head coach Justa Whitt said after the Bobcats improved to 3-1.
After (the loss to) Shiprock on Friday, we wanted to get our confidence back, the first-year head coach said.
An offensive surge triggered by defense helped the Bobcats build a 12-point halftime lead.
But it could have been bigger, Whitt said.
We missed a lot of ... easy shots. We missed a lot of layups, Whitt said.
We could have blown them away by more than we did if we had made some of those layups, Whitt said.
Mariah Vigil led the Bobcats with 13 points, including 9 of 11 from the free throw line. She also had nine rebounds.
Michelle Simmons added 10 points and nine rebounds. She also had six steals in Ignacios win.
Sky Cotton scored eight points and had four steals.
Skys older sister, Pam Cotton, had five points, seven rebounds and five steals against Farmington on Saturday.
We were very good at running our offense (Saturday), Whitt said.
We were patient. We passed the ball around, and we got better looks. Thats good for us.
The Ignacio girls beat Aztec on Thursday before the loss to tournament host Shiprock on Friday.
The Bobcats defeated Bloomfield (N.M.) in their home opener last week.
Combined with Saturdays win over Farmington, all three Ignacio victories have come against bigger New Mexico high schools.
The Ignacio girls will return to the court next Friday when they host Sargent at 5:30 p.m. in a nonconference game.
The boys varsity game between Ignacio and Sargent will follow the girls game at 7 p.m.
