The Bayfield High School boys basketball team caught a cold in its opening scrimmage against the Durango junior varsity team Tuesday night at Durango High School.
The Wolverines, who struggled offensively, lost 46-34 in the exhibition that will not count on the official record for BHS.
We had nothing going with our offense, Bayfield head coach Bill Hesford said. We had a really hard time getting established on offense.
The Wolverines trailed by two at halftime before going cold in the second half.
The guys played really hard, but we really need to execute a lot better, Hesford said. We need to take care of the basketball.
Sophomore Preston Hardy scored nine points and had 10 rebounds in the Tuesday night scrimmage.
Senior Tyler Kerr also scored nine points for BHS. He added seven rebounds.
Joey Webb and Eirik Kins added six each for the Wolverines.
The Bayfield boys officially will start their season with a doubleheader Friday at the Cortez Tournament. The Wolverines will play Miyamura of Gallup, N.M., at 4:30 p.m. They will take on host Montezuma-Cortez at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Cortez.
