Durango High Schools Nick Tarpley claimed a title in the prestigious Warrior Classic wrestling tournament in Grand Junction on Saturday.
Tarpley, wrestling at 152 pounds, won two more matches Saturday to win his division in the elite, 38-team tournament at Central High School.
Nicks undefeated. Hes tearing it up right now, Durango head coach Doug Cuddie said after Tarpley scored a 3-2 decision over a wrestler from Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch) in Saturdays finals.
He wrestled really smart, Cuddie said. And he won a close match.
Tarpley, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A at 152 pounds by coloradopreps.com, improved to 14-0 on the season.
Teammate Matthew Lavengood finished second at the Warrior Classic in the 113-pound bracket.
Matthew wrestled well. He had a great tournament, Cuddie said.
Lavengood had to wrestle Paonias Josh Altman in the finals for the third consecutive week. Altman, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A, won 8-5.
Daniel Gustavson finished fifth for Durango at 220 pounds, giving the Demons three placers in the Warrior Classic.
Daniel wrestled well ... this was his first trip to the Warrior, Cuddie said.
The Demons finished 12th out of 38 teams, and Tarpley gave DHS a tournament winner for the third consecutive year.
In the previous two years, DHS heavyweight Trevor Gillen, now graduated, won Warrior titles.
