On top of the six national championships that the Durango DEVO team won and the narrow misses by Durangoan Todd Wells, Lars Ellefson added to the impressive local haul last weekend at the USA Cycling National Mountain Bike Championships at Sol Vista Bike Park in Granby.
Ellefson, 19, won the men's 19-29 Super D race Sunday.
"I actually won, which is a pretty big accomplishment because it was nationals," said Ellefson, a Park Rapids, Minn., native who plans to pedal for Fort Lewis College this fall.
"I didn't really have an idea," he said of his expectations entering the race. "This was only my second Super D ever."
Ellefson competed in a Super D - a mix between cross country and downhill - last year, and this was his first this season. He won by more than 15 seconds.
Elke Brutsaert (Pro Women/Open Super D), Howard Grotts (Cat 1 Men's 15-16 Cross Country), Elyse Massone (Cat 3 Women's 15-18 Cross Country), Alicia Rose Pastore (Cat 1 Women's 15-18 Cross Country), Kaylee Blevins (Junior Women's 13-14 Cross Country) and Annie Cheeney (Cat 2 Women's 30-39 Cross Country) all won first-place honors for DEVO last weekend. Brutsaert and Cheeney are coaches.
