Not only did the Durango Dodgers take bronze at the American Athletic Baseball Congress (AABC) State Tournament in Bloomfield, N.M., two weekends ago, the team of 11- and 12-year-olds won the Sportsmanship Award, as well.
Durango earned an invite to the state tournament after winning a city tournament in Durango on July 1.
Durango, coached by Tony Gasaway, Ben Stowers, Scott Paul and Bill Mullen, finished the state tournament 4-3 for third place. Durango defeated the Farmington Dodgers 19-8 on July 9, then lost 10-9 in extra innings July 10 to the Aztec Flames. Durango won two in a row July 11 - 23-3 against the Shiprock Mets and 16-9 against the Bayfield Athletics. Durango lost to the Bloomfield Bulldogs
7-4 on July 12.
Durango, sponsored by The Stillwater Foundation, was awarded the Sportsmanship Award from tournament organizers and officials for its players, coaches and parents who showed the best sportsmanship and support for their team and respect for other teams and game officials.
Members of the Dodgers are Marcus Crawford, Isaac Korce, Michael Mullen, Ben Wiley, Justin Marcum, Mason Stetler, Joe Reed, Nolan Stowers, Christopher Jaworsky, Zac Gasaway, A.J. Sidener, Austin Howerton, Clay Eggleston, Steele Spies and Hayden Sil.
