Six more Olympic medals, and he’s AP’s Male Athlete
Michael Phelps retired from swimming after winning six medals at the London Games, two less than he won in Beijing in 2008 when he last won The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. The man with 18 gold medals – twice as many as anyone else in Olympic history – won the award again in 2012.
Michael Phelps retired at age 27 as soon as he finished his final race at the London Games, having won more gold medals (18) and overall medals (22) than any other Olympian. For the second time in his career, Phelps won The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
