If the Demons girls basketball team relished its overtime thriller Friday night at the onset of the Palisade Holiday Tournament, the Durango High School boys basketball team did the opposite.
And they had to do it twice.
The Demons lost to Cheyenne South (Wyo.) 64-60 in double overtime Friday in their first game of the Palisade tournament.
We had our opportunities, DHS head coach Alan Batiste said.
And they did. The Demons led as the seconds wound down in regulation, led as the seconds wound down in the first overtime and led as the seconds wound down in the final overtime.
After trailing by seven with 5½ minutes remaining in regulation, the Demons climbed back in, went on a run and took the lead by one, Batiste said.
DHS had a two-point lead with the game nearly over, but the Bison hit a layup to force overtime.
In Overtime 1, the Demons again led by two, but South swung the ball to the high post, pulled up for a short jumper, and the ball rolled in for a second overtime.
Then, trailing by two points again, the Bison hit a 3, and this time, the Demons didnt come back.
Weve had enough of those (close games) in the last two years, Batiste said. Thats the biggest thing is getting over that hump and winning the game.
It just comes down to mental toughness toward the end of the game, he said. We just need to focus when were tired.
Willy Frownfelter led the team with 15 points, followed by Nick Hamlins 13 and nine rebounds.
Isaiah Mayberry also had nine off the glass, which helped us out tremendously, Batiste said.
The Demons (5-2) will play host Palisade at 2:30 p.m. today.
