Diminutive gymnast turns big game and big smile into a big prize

Gabrielle Douglas, who became the first black gymnast to claim gymnastics’ biggest prize – the all-around Olympic title – won The Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Year award Friday, and she won it in the same dominant fashion that she displayed at this year’s London Games.

Gabrielle Douglas uprooted herself from her Virginia Beach, Va., home to train with gymnastics coach Liang Chow in West Des Moines, Iowa. Douglas’ sacrifice and the two’s teamwork led to the Americans’ domination at this year’s London Games, and it eventually led to Douglas’ honor as the AP Female Athlete of the Year.
