The Durango High School girls basketball team finished their 2012 regular-season schedule right on McCue.
After a 21-rebound performance in a 56-54 overtime victory Friday night in the opening round of the Palisade Holiday Tournament, the Demons Emily McCue led DHS to a 53-45 victory over host Palisade on Saturday.
The 5-11 junior scored 24 points, was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line, and DHS head coach Nancy Smith said her post player was right around 10 rebounds and a double-double.
Shes really figured out where to be, Smith said. Shes figuring out how strong she needs to be. Shes figuring out how to play in the paint.
For the second consecutive night, the Demons were well-rounded on offense, too. Molly Barnes scored eight, Dominique Ward scored seven, and Katie Wiegert scored six.
All 12 girls that came with us (to Palisade), they are good, strong basketball players, Smith said. You shut down one, another girl is going to step up.
While they avoided overtime, the Demons eight-point margin of victory Saturday wasnt exactly easy.
Not necessarily, said Smith, the former Wake Forest basketball player in her first full season at DHS. I dont know if Ill ever coach a relaxing game, she said after calling Fridays win a little high on the blood pressure.
DHS (5-2) is off for the holidays and will return to the court to start its 2013 slate with a home game against Kirtland Central at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8.
