Who was Ralph Carr?

DENVER – The man whose name graces the new state Supreme Court complex was a forgotten hero of Colorado history until a few years ago.

Gov. Ralph Carr led the state from 1939 to 1943, and he was governor during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the early years of World War II.

At a time when other states were kicking out Japanese-Americans and the federal government was throwing them into internment camps, Carr stood up for their rights.

He welcomed displaced Japanese-Americans to Colorado, over the objections of many Colorado citizens.

“If you harm them, you must harm me,” he said.

Carr began as a popular Republican governor, but lost his campaign for Senate, a loss he attributed to his stand on minority rights.

Former KUSA television journalist Adam Schrager wrote a book about Carr in 2008, “The Principled Politicians,” which help resurrect Carr’s memory in his native state.
