The Bayfield High School girls basketball team, according to head coach Ronnie Posey, took a huge step forward Saturday.
The Wolverines, playing the championship game of the Aztec Invitational, battled New Mexico big-school power Artesia from start to finish.
The first half was one of the best halves of Bayfield girls basketball Ive ever seen, Posey said after the Wolverines trailed only 31-25 at halftime.
We stepped up and slapped them right in the chops, Posey said. But we just couldnt keep up with their big girls.
Artesia eventually won 63-39.
But that was the best effort from one of my teams ever, Posey said.
Destiny McGhehey led the balanced attack with 11 points for the Wolverines. Jaida Ross and Haley Clarke added 10 points each.
Bayfield senior Micaela Knickerbocker was voted to the all-tournament team, Posey said.
We actually had five girls get votes (for the all-tournament team), Posey said. That shows the full team we are.
He said the Wolverines gained a lot of experience with a 2-1 showing in Aztec to start 2013.
The Wolverines (5-4 overall) will host Montezuma-Cortez at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
