Malaria on way? Check weather

Influenza, West Nile – disease forecasters make model by looking to sky
Weather is iffy in forecasting disease. Weather conditions helped spur mosquito breeding and the spread of West Nile virus in 2012. But while the Dallas area was hard-hit, other places with similar weather patterns were not as affected.
Using a newly designed model, researchers will make real-time disease predictions as early as next year, says Jeffrey Shaman of Columbia University’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Shaman led the work.
