Wolverines, Demons battle in Pagosa Springs

Durango High School wrestler Nick Tarpley extended his unbeaten streak to 18 consecutive matches Saturday when he won the championship of the 152-pound bracket at the annual Rocky Mountain Shootout tournament in Pagosa Springs.

“Nick is attacking all the time. Guys just can’t keep up with his pace,” Durango head coach Doug Cuddie said. “He’s really attacking, and it’s paying off.”

Patrick Cunnion of Durango, a sophomore, finished second at 170 pounds.

“It was really nice for him to make the finals as a sophomore,” Cuddie said.

Cunnion defeated a top Piedra Vista wrestler to reach the finals, Cuddie said.

Matthew Lavengood, a DHS previous state qualifier, finished third at 113 pounds.

Teammate Clay Dillon, another previous state qualifier, also finished third Saturday (126 pounds).

Daniel Gustavson of DHS was fourth at 220 pounds.

“We’ve got to put everything together now,” Cuddie said.

The Demons will host Aztec in a dual match Tuesday night at Durango High School.

Bayfield High School finished the Shootout with one runner-up and a pair of third-place finishers.

The Wolverines finished sixth out of 14 teams in Pagosa Springs.

“I was really pleased with how hard we fought all day long,” Bayfield head coach Todd McMenimen said.

Matt Certes of the Wolverines finished second in the 220-pound weight class. “Matt wrestled really well (Saturday),” McMenimen said.

Drake Rhodes 9138) and Joe Zink (145) finished third in their respective weight classes.

Alec Rodriguez was fourth at 132 matching the finish of teammate Matt Eckstein (heavyweight).

Michael Goodman 9182) added a fifth place for Bayfield, as did Colter McMenimen (126). McMenimen lost only one match Saturday, falling in the opening match to Dillon of Durango.

McMenimen beat a two-time Utah state champion en route to his fifth place.

Two other BHS wrestlers recorded their first high school wins at the tournament – Angus Taylor (120) and Taylor Winch (113).
