The Ignacio High School boys basketball team bounced back Saturday with a 91-79 win over host Aztec in the annual Rumble in the Jungle Tournament in New Mexico.
We played better, no doubt, Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said. The Bobcats were coming off a tough loss to Piedra Vista on Friday night in Aztec.
We got up by in the thrid quarter, and we played everybody on the bench, Valdez said. They press, press, press. And I thought we did a good job breaking their press.
Adding that the Bobcats converted several lay- ups after breaking the Tigers press.
We got some rhythm on offense, Valdez said.
Freshman Wyatt Hayes, forced into the point guard role when Clayton Jefferson encountered early foul trouble, led the Bobcats with a season- and career-high 14 assists Saturday. He also had 10 points for a double-double.
Jefferson, with a strong second half, finished with 13 points and seven assists.
Justin Carver led the Bobcats in scoring with 21 points.
He played so much better (Saturday).
He was all over the floor, Valdez said.
Valdez said the Bobcats were hoping to collect four wins in the two New Mexico tournaments this season,.
To win five of the six games was good, Valdez said.
The Bobcats, 7-2 overall, are ranked No. 6 in Class 2A by The Denver Post.
