An illustrative past

E is for entertainment, education and Eddie
After a successful career as an illustrator that included work for Walt Disney, Eddie Martinez is looking to “pay it forward.” His ongoing work on Mesoamerican cultures bridges archaeology, history and writing as well as traditional and digital artwork.
One of Eddie Martinez’s greatest thrills was getting to paint Walt Disney as part of a 55-foot-long, 6-foot-high oil mural at Disneyland. This is just a portion of the mural titled “The Fifth Freedom” that featured famous Americans.
Eddie Martinez didn’t stop illustrating after he retired from the business in 2002. In his Bayfield studio he’s working on an illustrated novel that features several Mesoamerican tribes and a lead character who goes into the past to visit them.
Working both digitally and with traditional artists’ tools, Eddie Martinez continues to churn out illustrations featuring ancient American cultures, including a series of drawings that bring Chaco Canyon’s Casa Riconada to life.
