When you don’t have mountains ...

From left, Jason Chapman, Corey Hetrick and Eric Henderson climb an ice-covered silo on a farm northwest of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Climbers have been scaling the silo, an idea started by University of Northern Iowa physical education instructor Don Briggs, each winter since 2001. Now, there are more than 300 season pass holders.
Fourteen-year-old Larame Boysen climbs the silo on Rusty Leymaster’s farm near Cedar Falls. It’s reportedly the largest ice-climbing silo in the Midwest.
John Anderson of Dallas Center, Iowa, works to get his pick in the ice as he ascends the silo. It’s run mostly by volunteers and Northern Iowa students. The university also supplies climbing gear for newcomers.
