I suppose there are more serious issues to concern myself with, but the recent Herald article (July 25) concerning the rope swing really struck a chord with me. It's a shame that our society has reached the point that a simple rope swing would be a point of contention for anyone. I fully understand that the city cannot put itself in a position of possible liability. How sad that it would even be an issue.
One would think that if you hurt yourself while playing, it would be your own fault. One would also think that if anyone swinging on a rope or playing in the river were making a nuisance of himself, he might stop when politely asked.
How has it come to be that law enforcement is summoned for every little annoying thing that happens? I'm sure the Durango Police Department has more important things to do than monitor the rope swing. I don't have an answer to the problem, but a little personal responsibility and respect for your neighbor would go a long way.
