Ignacio resident finalist in contest
Patti Buck of Ignacio is one of nine finalists in the Hungry Jack recipe contest.
People are able to vote for her Ragin Cajun Shrimp recipe at www.hungryjack.com. Buck used three Hungry Jack products in her recipe.
The winner will receive free groceries for a year. People who participate in the online voting will be entered in a drawing for one of five prizes for each day of the voting period.
Winners will be announced April 16.
Benefit for firefighter will be held Feb. 7
A fundraising benefit for firefighter and Durango resident Brian Cartwright will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Palace Restaurant, 505 Main Ave., and from 8 p.m. to closing Feb. 7 at the El Rancho, 975 Main Ave.
The event will feature burgers, drink specials, Ska Brewing Co. beer and a silent auction at the Palace followed by live music from No Fault, raffles, door prizes and more at El Rancho.
Cartwright suffered a severe neck injury and needs financial support in his recovery.

Musical performance to benefit nonprofits
Musicians Garrett Lebeau and Bonnie Bishop will perform Blues for the Rivers Blues for the Sky on Feb. 7 at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m. This show is a fundraiser for San Juan Citizens Alliance and La Plata Open Space Conservancy. Tickets are on sale at Marias Bookshop, Animas Trading Co. and by calling 259-3583.
Education in Southwest will be focus of talk
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host the talk Education and Its Uses in the Southwest: Historical Perspectives at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Lyceum Room.
The presentation will provide background for the current state of education in the region.
Center Director Jay Harrison will consider early history of American peoples, European influences and the formalization of education since the expansion of the Untied States in the Southwest.
Refreshments will be offered beginning at 5:30 p.m.
