Party to benefit local EMT, firefighter

A fundraising party to help Durango firefighter and EMT Brian Cartwright, a 20-year Durango resident and Fort Lewis College graduate who suffered a severe neck injury, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Palace Restaurant, 505 Main Ave., and from 8 p.m. to closing Thursday at the El Rancho Tavern, 975 Main Ave.

Cash donations and donations of silent auction items are being accepted. Cartwright had surgery in December 2012. He is on unpaid leave, and his bills are mounting.

AARP to host driver safety program

An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Pine Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The classroom refresher course is especially designed for drivers age 50 and older.

Auto insurance discounts are available in most states through an insurance agent. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

90-minute bird walk slated for Wednesday

A bird walk will be hosted by Weminuche Audubon Society at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

Participants will explore the habitat along the Animas River Trail around the Durango Fish Hatchery and Huck Finn Pond. The walk will last 90 minutes. Participants should bring binoculars.

The event is free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

Recycling center announces closure

In preparation for the transition to single-stream recycling, the Durango Recycling Center will be closed through Sunday.

The center will reopen for business Monday. The public drop-off locations will remain open.
