Ted Ligety’s giant slalom form was imitated but unmatched at the World Championships on Friday in Schladming, Austria. He carved out a massive margin of victory in the GS to become the first man in 45 years to win three golds at worlds. “I’m trying everything I can, but I’m not able to imitate him,” Italian GS veteran Davide Simoncelli said.

While most of the 35,000 fans who flooded the small Alpine village in Schladming, Austria, were hoping to see hometown hero Marcel Hirscher win, Ted Ligety also had his admirers. “He’s flying, not skiing. He goes from one victory to another,” Austrian Alpine director Hans Pum said. “He’s definitely the world champion, the triple champion,” Hirscher said. “I take my hat off to you.”

“I still don’t think I recognize what I’ve done this week,” said American skiing star Ted Ligety, whose three golds at these World Championships in Schladming, Austria, match a 45-year-old feat. “It’s just been so phenomenal to win three gold medals, especially in two events that I hadn’t won in before.”
