Dave Metz’s dogs Jimmy and Will walk along the Noatak River in Alaska’s Brooks Ridge. Metz, a biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, hiked more than 1,200 miles along the length of the rugged northern Alaska range in three segments between 2007 and 2012. It took a lot of bushwhacking, and he encountered a grizzly bear and a pack of wolves along the way.
